How the North Carolina model works
North Carolina uses a flat-rate model here. The encoded rate is 4%, with a modeled deduction of $12,750 for a single filer and $25,500 for a married joint filer. A flat rate still does not mean the percentage is applied directly to every dollar of gross pay: encoded deductions reduce the modeled state taxable amount first.

$75,000 salary example in North Carolina
Assuming a single filer, the standard modeled deduction, no dependents, no local rate, and no voluntary deductions, annual gross pay of $75,000 produces estimated annual take-home pay of $59,109. That includes about $7,670 of federal income tax, $2,484 of North Carolina income tax, $4,650 of Social Security, and $1,088 of Medicare.
| Annual take-home | $59,109 |
|---|---|
| Monthly take-home | $4,925.73 |
| Biweekly take-home | $2,273.41 |
| Effective tax rate | 21.2% |
How income changes the estimate
The following fixed scenarios use the same 2026 single-filer assumptions so that the effect of the encoded North Carolina schedule can be compared without changing filing status or deductions.
| Gross salary | Modeled state tax | Total tax rate | Annual take-home | Monthly take-home |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $1,087 | 16.9% | $33,233 | $2,769.39 |
| $75,000 | $2,484 | 21.2% | $59,109 | $4,925.73 |
| $125,000 | $4,479 | 26.2% | $92,225 | $7,685.39 |
North Carolina assumptions and local taxes
Local wage income tax is not modeled. This page models full-year resident wages under the encoded flat annual income-tax schedule. Credits, dependents, reciprocity, nonresident allocation, and employer withholding-certificate elections can change the final liability or the amount withheld from an individual paycheck.
The state estimate uses resident wage income and the dataset’s flat schedule. It does not model credits, dependents, nonresident allocation, reciprocity, special deductions, or state withholding-certificate elections. The support record additionally identifies these exclusions: Employer withholding tables are not implemented.; Most state payroll deductions and insurance programs are not included.; Local taxes are excluded unless the user enters a known local rate.; Credits, dependents, reciprocity, and nonresident or part-year rules are not modeled.; Local wage income tax is not modeled..
